[INDOT] HOWARD, TIPTON CO: Chip Seals W/S.R. 28 Closure Next Week
Start Date: 6/27/2013Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Date: 6/28/2013End Time: 9:55 AM
Entry Description

TIPTON, Ind.—Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews plan to chip seal sections of State Road 28 and S.R. 213 next week—weather permitting.  There will be a closure on S.R. 28.

On Monday (JULY 1), INDOT Tipton Subdistrict personnel will place liquid asphalt topped with small stone chips on S.R. 28 between Tipton (at S.R. 213) and Elwood.  Both lanes of this 9-mile section of east-west roadway will be closed early in the day.  Access will be maintained for residents and those traveling to businesses along the route.

On Tuesday (JULY 2), the INDOT schedule calls for chip sealing S.R. 213 from S.R. 28 to the south side of Windfall.

Fog sealing the two highways will be done after the 4th of July weekend.

Chip sealing is a cost effective way to protect pavements from moisture intrusion and ultra-violet degradation.  It extends the service life of highways that have lower traffic counts—and saves money for the taxpayer.  Studies show that every $1 invested in chip seal surface treatment saves $10 in future road repairs.

In addition to sealing the pavement, chip seal applications reestablish surface friction—improving safety for the motoring public.

The follow-up fog seal further seals the roadway from moisture.  At the same time, it secures any loose aggregate and dampens dust from fines.

INDOT strongly advises motorists to drive slowly and with caution on recently chip-sealed roads.
