[s14] KRUSE REPORT: Hoosier Boys’ and Girls’ State
Start Date: 6/24/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 6/24/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
Each June, hundreds of Hoosier teens take a week of their summer breaks to learn the ins and outs of government operation and how it impacts daily life. They do so by attending the Hoosier Boys’ and Girls’ State programs. These programs simulate our state’s governmental process by selecting Indiana high school juniors who demonstrate leadership and outstanding academic achievement to attend as “delegates.”

I understand at first glance this may not seem like the typical “summer fun,” but these retreats provide students with knowledge, opportunities for growth and peer networking that can truly last a lifetime.

Since their inception in 1937, Hoosier Boys’ and Girls’ State have annually drawn hundreds of delegates. Participants gather at a designated Indiana college campus where they’re randomly placed in a fictional political party. Within these parties, students discuss platforms, and eventually every attendee will campaign for a political office of their choice.

The campaign process fosters interaction between the delegates and their peers and encourages students to determine their stance on certain issues. The week-long event of learning the political process is a fantastic hands-on, collaborative insight into government.
Having a grasp on the procedures and laws involved in the process of government is truly an invaluable asset for the young and old alike. So how can you or your child get involved in this program? You can start by mentioning your interest to your school administrators or social studies teachers. Your local American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary can also assist you in the application process.

If you’ve ever spoken to someone who has attended Hoosier Boys’ or Girls’ State, I have no doubt they gained a new understanding of how our state’s democracy runs. Also, the connections that are made between attendees will prove valuable long after the week’s program has ended. Even those who have no future political aspirations can obtain powerful insight for their future from Hoosier Boys’ and Girls’ State.
