Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (June 19, 2013) — Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has appointed State Sen. John Waterman (R-Shelburn) as a member of the Military Base Planning Council and Native American Indian Affairs Commission.

“Supporting the defense facilities located in Indiana is a significant responsibility of the Military Base Planning Council,” Waterman said. “The council also helps attract new businesses to locate into areas like Westgate Crane Technology Center. It’s important we continue to support these facilities because of the contributions they make to our state.”

Waterman added he is a long-time advocate for Native American heritage and is honored to serve on the Native American Indian Affairs Commission.

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“Study committees are an essential part of Indiana’s legislative process,” Long said. “Many of the issues that lawmakers consider during the summer and fall months are the foundation for legislation that will come before the General Assembly in the upcoming session.”

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
