Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (June 20, 2013) — Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has appointed State Sen. Allen Paul (R-Richmond) as Chair of the Commission on Military and Veterans Affairs.

“This past session we passed some significant bills for veterans,” Paul said. “One bill that stands out is the ‘combat to college’ program that will be created in public universities around the state for veterans wanting to pursue a college degree. And starting on July 1, we now offer in-state tuition for veterans who enroll in a state institution no later than a year after discharging from the military. It is my goal this summer to continue to develop new ideas and programs to help veterans succeed.”

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“Study committees are an essential part of Indiana’s legislative process,” Long said. “Many of the issues that lawmakers consider during the summer and fall months are the foundation for legislation that will come before the General Assembly in the upcoming session.”

In addition, Paul was also appointed to serve on the following committees:

•    Interim Study Committee on Driver Education
•    Joint Study Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
