[r68] Rep. McMillin receives summer study committee assignments
Start Date: 6/21/2013 All Day
End Date: 6/21/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) appointed State Representative Jud McMillin (R-Brookville) to serve on the following summer study committees: Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions and Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy. In addition to his committee assignments, Rep. McMillin will also serve on the Indiana Public Defender Commission.

“It is a privilege to serve the people of Southeast Indiana through my various committee assignments,” said Rep. McMillin. “Summer study committees provide an excellent environment for sound policy discussions to take place. By working with my colleagues, subject matter experts and hearing testimony from the public, we can work together to resolve critical issues to benefit Hoosiers.”

After the conclusion of every legislation session, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics for study during the summer months, known as the interim. Additionally, the council establishes any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue. Most interim committees will begin meeting in July with their work wrapping up toward the end of October.

Interim committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Even though session is adjourned for 2013, legislators will be continuing their duties by conducting in-depth studies of various topics assigned to their committees. Interim committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is introduced in the 2014 session.

“These committees are indispensable to the legislative process, and by providing additional time to study every aspect of an issue, we will work towards finding the best possible solution, continuing to move Indiana forward,” said Rep. McMillin.
