[r68] Rep. McMillin appointed to prestigious committees
Start Date: 6/19/2013 All Day
End Date: 6/19/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — State Representative Jud McMillin (R-Brookville) was recently appointed to serve on two prestigious committees: the Council of State Government’s (CSGs) Suggested State Legislation Committee (SSL) and the National Conference of State Legislature’s (NCSL) Law and Criminal Justice Committee (LCJ). Both groups allow for state leaders to discuss public policy issues and through idea sharing, work towards finding innovative solutions.

“I’m honored to receive these two appointments, and I look forward to participating in these multi-state policy discussions,” said Rep. McMillin. “Collaborating and working with other state leaders is an excellent opportunity to resolve issues and share ideas on public policy that can benefit Hoosiers. Throughout these discussions, I intend to capitalize on every opportunity to better our state and grow as a leader.”

Founded in 1933, the CSG is a regional forum that works to assist state officials in shaping public policy. Additionally, the CSG works to develop leaders, provide expansive networking opportunities and create problem-solving partnerships.

As a member of the SSL Committee, Rep. McMillin will oversee the SSL Program. The program’s goal is to share state modernizations and review, identify and disseminate prospective legislation on important major public policy issues. The committee typically meets twice a year, and its members are comprised of biennially appointed public officials.

Comprised of 10 standing committees meeting triennially, the NCSL works to develop official policy directives by serving as a venue for idea sharing on fresh legislation. The meetings often feature congressional guest speakers and experts on state issues.

The LCJ Committee members discuss various criminal justice issues working to balance the role between the state and federal system. Some of the topics include: capital punishment, crime victims, drug crime, corrections, drug crime, law enforcement, juvenile justice, parole and probation and criminal sentencing.

“Building a bond between state leaders allows us to unify against a common problem, strengthening our ability to resolve critical issues,” said Rep. McMillin. “Policy discussions like these need to take place, and I look forward to applying what I learn in these meetings to benefit our state.”
