Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (June 19, 2013) —Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has appointed State Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport) as Chair of the Indiana Commission on Autism and the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations.

During the 2013 legislative session, Head authored a bill that addressed the use of seclusion and restraint as a means to protect students from harming themselves or others while in school – an issue that is particularly relevant to children with autism. Head said his work on this measure allowed him to interact with autism advocacy groups and families, helping him understand the unique situations of many students with autism.

“Our children with autism and their families often face circumstances that are different from what many others face,” Head said. “Because of that, it’s our duty as a state to ensure they’re receiving proper care and support. The commission will review the resources available to these families and make recommendations for any necessary improvements.”

Head will also chair the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, which will examine issues that affect both state and local governments. Long chose Head for this role because he chairs the Senate Local Government Committee during the legislative session.

“It’s a unique opportunity to chair two interim study committees,” Head said. “I’m honored to be trusted with this responsibility, and I look forward to working with my colleagues throughout the summer.”

In addition, Head was appointed to serve on the Census Data Advisory Committee and the Military Base Planning Council.

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“Study committees are an essential part of Indiana’s legislative process,” Long said. “Many of the issues that lawmakers consider during the summer and fall months are the foundation for legislation that will come before the General Assembly in the upcoming session.”

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
