Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (June 19, 2013) — Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has appointed State Sen. Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn) as co-chair of Education, Regional Campuses and Common Core committees for 2013.

“Each of these committees focus on vital issues to make sure our education system is the best it can be for our students,” Kruse said. “In particular, I am eager to begin the Commission on Education hearings which start this Friday.”

Kruse added the Commission on Education will use its first meeting this Friday to discuss the technical difficulties many students and schools experienced with this year’s ISTEP test.

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“Study committees are an essential part of Indiana’s legislative process,” Long said. “Many of the issues that lawmakers consider during the summer and fall months are the foundation for legislation that will come before the General Assembly in the upcoming session.”

In addition, Kruse was also appointed to serve on the following committees:

•    Education Commissions of the States
•    Education Roundtable
•    Regulatory Flexibility Committee

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
