[42] Sen. Leising Receives Study Committee Assignments
Start Date: 6/18/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 6/18/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (June 18, 2013) — Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has appointed State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) as a member of the Commission on Education and the Health Finance Commission for 2013.

“Study committees are an essential part of Indiana’s legislative process,” Long said. “Many of the issues that lawmakers consider during the summer and fall months are the foundation for legislation that will come before the General Assembly in the upcoming session.”

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“We actually already have a meeting scheduled for the Commission on Education this Friday to hear and discuss issues regarding the ISTEP test,” Leising said. “And starting next week, the Health Finance Commission will begin looking into ideas about how to comply with the Affordable Care Act. Even though we are not in session, this interim will be a very productive and informative part of the legislative process.”

In addition, Leising was appointed to serve on the following committees:

•    Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Senile Dementia Task Force
•    Corn Marketing Council
•    Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission
•    State Fair Advisory Committee
•    Regulatory Flexibility Committee

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
