[s31] Sen. Jim Merritt Receives Study Committee Assignments

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (June 18, 2013) — Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) has appointed State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) as chair of the State Fair Advisory Committee and co-chair of the Regulatory Flexibility Committee for 2013.

“I am eager to get to work on the challenges that these different committees represent,” Merritt said. “The summer months provide us with an opportunity to dig deep into important issues and seek input from experts and Hoosier citizens. It is my hope these committees will result in new ideas to brighten our communities and strengthen our state.”

Each summer and fall — when Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session — lawmakers are assigned to interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

“Study committees are a vital part of the legislative process because they often determine what new laws will come before the General Assembly during the next legislative session,” Merritt said.

Merritt has also been appointed to serve on the following:

• Board of Trustees of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites Corporation
• Interim Study Committee on Special Group Recognition License Plates
• Joint Study Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions
• Indiana White River State Park Development Commission
• Indiana Bicentennial Commission
• State Fair Commission

Study committee topics are assigned by the Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the House of Representatives and eight from the Senate.
