[INDOT] HOWARD COUNTY: S.R. 26 Chip Seal Next Week
Start Date: 6/7/2013Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 6/8/2013End Time: 2:55 PM
Entry Description

TIPTON, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation will close State Road 26 next week between U.S. Highway 31 and S.R. 13—Monday (JUNE 10) to Friday (JUNE 14).  Motorists are advised to avoid the closure via S.R. 22 connecting U.S. 31 and S.R. 13 to the north.  Limited access will be maintained for residents along the restricted route.

INDOT maintenance crews from the subdistrict at Tipton have been scheduled to work 12½-hour days to chip seal nearly 32 lane miles of S.R. 26 between U.S. 31 and S.R. 13—weather permitting—beginning early Monday morning.

Once the liquid asphalt topped with fine aggregate has been put down, state workers will sweep the east-west highway to clear away loose stone.  Officials anticipate sweeping operations to take place Thursday.

Friday and Saturday, a fog seal will be applied—overcoating the new chip seal and dampening the dust.  During this operation, traffic will be directed around moving worksites by flaggers.

Chip seal surface treatments are a very cost effective way to protect roadbeds from moisture intrusion and ultra-violet degradation.  The process also improves safety for the motoring public by reestablishing surface friction.  What’s more, it saves money.

Studies show that for every $1 invested in a chip seal $10 is saved through reduced road repairs and extended service life.

INDOT cautions motorist traveling through areas where liquid asphalt and loose stone have recently been applied to drive with extra care and reduced speeds.
