Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (June 5, 2013) – Yesterday, Gov. Mike Pence signed legislation co-authored by Allen Paul (R-Richmond) to help fund the restoration and preservation of Indiana’s historic battle flags.

Senate Enrolled Act 323 establishes a state fund to preserve battle flags used from the Mexican-American War to the Persian Gulf War. These battle flags were used by regiments to mark the group’s position and communicate instructions on the field. The flags are currently in need of repair because water damage and age have caused them to deteriorate.

Indiana’s battle flag collection is currently housed at the Indiana War Memorial Commission. It is one of the largest battle flag collections in the country, with more than 400 flags.

“Battle flag preservation is perhaps the most meaningful piece of legislation we have worked on this session to honor our state’s history,” Paul said. “Younger generations should be afforded the opportunity to see these flags and understand the history, courage and sacrifice they represent.”
