Entry Description
A public dedication ceremony for an Indiana state historical marker commemorating Froebel School is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2014. The marker will be dedicated at 11:00 A.M. (CDT) at Froebel Memorial Park, located at 15th Ave. and Madison St., Gary, Indiana 46407. Parking is available along the street.

The text follows for the state marker entitled “Froebel School”:

Froebel opened here, 1912, as many European immigrants and southern blacks moved to Gary for jobs in steel mills. An experiment in progressive education, it served students of diverse backgrounds and the local community. Despite early status as integrated school, black students were excluded from many extracurricular activities and facilities into 1940s. Closed 1977. After WWII, Froebel made national headlines when hundreds of white students walked out protesting “integration experiment” there. “Hate strikes” lasted several weeks in 1945 and reflected growing racial tension in North. In 1946, Gary school board adopted desegregation policy, but discrimination continued. Indiana state law desegregating public schools passed 1949.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for this Indiana state historical marker that commemorates one of Gary’s early schools and honors its significance in the history of the community. State Representative Vernon Smith will be the primary speaker at the dedication.

State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For more than 95 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, an agency of the State of Indiana, has been marking Indiana history.  Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. There are approximately 500 of these markers across the state.
