[s7] Sen. Hershman’s Bill to Spur Utility Development Signed into Law

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (May 2, 2013) — A bill authored by State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) to facilitate the development of new utility infrastructure was signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence.

Senate Bill 560 encourages the development of natural gas and water service in underserved areas of Indiana. This measure would accomplish the following:

  • Allow each county to establish zones in which infrastructure for these services would be exempt from property taxes.
  • Streamline processes for energy companies to recover the costs of expansion projects.
  • Give companies new incentives to improve service to Hoosier customers.

Hershman said the new law could make significant improvements in the cost of energy and ease the process of upgrading Indiana’s utilities infrastructure.

“Hoosiers will now have more access to affordable energy options, which could save households with traditional heating methods an average of $1,600 per year,” Hershman said. “But the effects of this bill aren’t particular to only those families. Through infrastructure development zones, counties could encourage utility development and create a financial incentive for companies to build. That could mean better energy options for Hoosiers everywhere.”
