STATEHOUSE (May 1, 2013) – State Sen. Sue Landske (R-Cedar Lake) urges Hoosiers to observe Lupus Awareness Month by educating themselves on the impacts of the disease, as well as supporting programs of research, education and community service at Indiana’s chapter of the Lupus Foundation.

Gov. Pence officially declared May as Lupus Awareness Month in Indiana to raise awareness of the 36,000 Hoosiers affected by the disease.

The Indiana Chapter of the Lupus Foundation has organized the following events in Northwest Indiana to help provide awareness and education of the disease:

  • May 2 – “Living with Lupus” Symposium, Crown Point. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. and the Symposium is from 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. Franciscan St Anthony Health, 1201 S. Main Street, Crown Point.
  • May 10 – National “Put on Purple” Day takes place all across Indiana for Hoosiers to show their support of Lupus awareness.
  • May 18 – Northwest IN Walk to End Lupus Now, Lake County Fairgrounds, Crown Point.  Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 11:00 a.m. Registration is also available at http://www.lupusindiana.org.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s immune system. The disease can cause pain, inflammation and damage to the body’s joints, skin or organs. It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans have Lupus.

Lupus is a very difficult disease to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to many other illnesses. Because of this, patients often spend years visiting multiple doctors before being diagnosed with Lupus. Still, researchers are working to find more knowledge on the causes and consequences of Lupus.

You can learn more about Lupus by visiting the Lupus Foundation of America website.
