Rep. Mahan receives 2014 Indiana Early Childhood Legislative Award

STATEHOUSE — State Representative Kevin Mahan (R-Hartford City) received the 2014 Indiana Early Childhood Legislative Award from the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC). The award was presented at the annual Indiana AEYC conference in Indianapolis on Friday.

“Rep. Mahan authored House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1036 which increases the health and safety of all children receiving federal assistance for child care,” said Dianna Wallace, Executive Director of the Indiana AEYC. “His dedication and ability to embrace all perspectives while keeping his vision on the importance of children is recognized by the 2,200 members of the Indiana AEYC.”

HEA 1036 protects young Hoosiers by establishing health, education, safety and training requirements for child care providers that receive money from the Child Care Development Fund, a federal voucher program that helps low-income parents obtain child care while they work, receive training or earn an education. The bill also sets requirements for group size, basic health and safety standards and child-to-staff ratios. HEA 1036 was signed into law by Gov. Pence on Wednesday.

“I am honored to receive the 2014 Indiana Early Childhood Legislative Award,” said Rep. Mahan. “The safety of our young Hoosiers is a top priority for me. It is my hope that we will continue to develop good policies to improve early child care and education in Indiana.”

Indiana AEYC is a statewide, nonprofit organization with 16 chapters and over 2,200 members. Their mission is to promote and support quality care and education for all young children, birth through age eight, in Indiana.
