Entry Description

Indianapolis, INGovernor Pence, joined by legislative leadership and high school students,  signed two bills today that will help to improve the quality of the Hoosier workforce, increase graduation rates and attract new investment in Indiana. Career education bills SB 465 and HB 1002 both passed with unanimous, bipartisan support from the Senate and House.

"Making career education work and ensuring that every high school student is college or career ready are key factors to moving our state's economy forward," said Governor Pence. "I am grateful to the leadership of both chambers of the General Assembly for taking an important step toward making make career and technical education a priority in every high school in Indiana again."

Senate Bill 465, which creates regional Indiana Works Councils, is the second Roadmap bill signed into law during this legislative session.  The councils will include representation from employers and educators who will evaluate career, technical, and vocational educational opportunities for high school students within each region. They also will design demand-driven curriculum to align educational pathways with high-wage, high-demand jobs.  Senator Dennis Kruse authored the bill in the Senate and Representative Bob Behning sponsored the bill in the House.

The Governor was joined by Lt. Governor Sue Ellsperman, Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, House Speaker Brian Bosma, Senate Minority Leader Tim Lanane, and House Minority Leader Scott Pelath and a number of members of both Chambers. Students from Ben Davis and Warren Central high schools also took part in the ceremonial bill signing in the South Atrium of the Statehouse.

Audio of the Governor's remarks is available here.
