[s15] Sen. Wyss’ Bill to Improve Ethics in Vehicle Dealer Services Signed into Law

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 26, 2013) – State Sen. Tom Wyss’ (R-Fort Wayne) legislation to improve ethics and transparency in vehicle dealer services was signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence today. Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) is the bill’s sponsor in the House of Representatives.

Senate Enrolled Act 537 creates a Dealer Services Division within the Office of the Secretary of State (SOS) to enforce regulations regarding licensed vehicle dealers. The legislation also provides guidelines on criminal penalties for unfair practices and violations against vehicle dealing rules as determined by the Secretary of State.

If the Secretary receives credible evidence that a vehicle dealer is engaging in illegal activity, the Secretary may begin a proceeding to administratively dissolve it.

“When a consumer purchases a car, they should have the assurance that it’s being done in an ethical, honest manner,” Wyss said. “The law signed today will give more customers that peace of mind by setting better strategies for monitoring and punishing unfair business practices. I’m thankful for Secretary of State Connie Lawson and Rep. Soliday’s ongoing support for this issue, which, I believe, will benefit Hoosiers.”
