Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (April 25, 2013) — The Senate on Wednesday approved a resolution authored by State Rep. Kathy Heuer (R-Columbia City) and sponsored by State Sen. Ryan Mishler (R-Bremen) urging the federal government to repeal a new excise tax on the sale of medical devices in the United States. The tax is a provision of the Affordable Care Act.

The medical device industry is a strong economic driver in Indiana, contributing $44 billion to the state’s economy and employing 26,000 Hoosiers. Under the new tax, the medical device industry is projected to pay a minimum of $77 million in taxes this year.

Mishler said that the tax would adversely affect residents of his district.

“In the health care industry, Warsaw is commonly known as the Orthopedic Capital of the World,” Mishler said. “Firms like Biomet, Zimmer, DePuy, Medtronic, Orthopediatrics and supporting companies account for $11 billion of the world’s $38 billion orthopedic industry and employ 13,000 people. I sponsored this resolution in an effort to preserve this great industry in Indiana.”
