Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS—State Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton) made his first public appearance as a solo artist during the sixth annual Hoosier Idol event, hosted by Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI).

The bipartisan event served as a charity fundraiser where members of the Indiana General Assembly showcased their talents to a panel of celebrity judges. Sen. Hume won the 2013 Hoosier Idol title after he performed a vocal and guitar solo and gained the largest amount of audience applause. Sen. Hume’s song, “Fields of Wildflowers,” was self-composed in honor of the legislator’s mother.

“I was very surprised to win this competition because the other performers did such an excellent job,” Sen. Hume said. “However, the real importance of this event was that it helped raise money for such a significant cause and brought legislators from both sides together through a common desire to benefit the Mental Health Association of Indiana.”

Led by President Stephen McCaffrey, MHAI is a grassroots organization focused on improving mental health issues through education and health reform. The group is made up of 40 local affiliates in Indiana and encompasses more than 20,000 members.

“We very much appreciate legislators participating in the Hoosier Idol event,” McCaffrey said. “This is a great opportunities for both parties to come together in a social setting and promote mental health awareness.”

MHAI developed after a resolution was adopted in 1915 that created a commission to research the issue of mental disorders in Indiana. Since its inception, the organization has advocated for several health-based policies, including mental health equality for children’s health insurance and licensure for Indiana addiction counselors.

This year, Hoosier Idol featured eight talent acts and contributes to the largest fundraising event organized by MHAI. The event raised thousands of dollars from major sponsors and ticket sales.

Sen. Hume represents Indiana Senate District 48 which includes all or portions of Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Spencer and Warrick Counties. For more information on Sen. Hume his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit www.IN.gov/S48.
