[ISP] Tipton County Under State of Emergency Due to Flooding
Start Date: 4/19/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/19/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Tipton County is under a state of emergency due to the number of roads closed due to flooding. Motorists should not travel through Tipton County, especially in the area of Tipton and immediately south of the city.

At this time members of the Indiana State Police, the Tipton Fire Department, the Tipton Police Department, the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department, and conservation officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are utilizing boats to evacuate individuals trapped in their homes by flood waters.

RESIDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CALL 911 IF THEY ARE TRAPPED AND FEEL THEY ARE IN DANGER. RESIDENTS DO NOT HAVE TO EVACUATE IF THEY FEEL THEY ARE NOT IN IMMEDIATE DANGER.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the water levels around their property and if it is rising to a dangerous level, call emergency responders immediately. Do not wait to until the last minute.

So far emergency crews have rescued approximately 22 individuals from various locations in and around Tipton. There is an emergency shelter set up at the Ash Street Wesleyan Church in Tipton. There have been approximately 12 individuals evacuated to the shelter but only three remain at this. So far there are no reported injuries.

Motorists are advised not to drive around barricades that indicate a road is closed. They should also follow the instructions of emergency service personnel who might be directing traffic away from hazardous situations. Please do not drive through flood waters even if there is no barricade. Roadways will reopen when flood waters recede allowing for safe road conditions.
