[INDOT] INDOT Raises Awareness of Work Zone Safety with Work Zone Event
Start Date: 4/15/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/18/2013End Time: Midnight
Entry Description
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Governor Michael R. Pence has proclaimed April 15-19, 2013, as Work Zone Awareness Week in Indiana. Work Zone Awareness Week marks the ceremonial start to highway construction season and intends to bring awareness to motorist and worker safety in work zones.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is dedicated to continuously improving work zone safety. This year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week theme is “We’re All In This Together,” and INDOT needs participation from everyone, especially motorists, to make highway work zones as safe as possible.

On Monday, April 15, INDOT allowed members of the media to get a firsthand look at the importance of work zone awareness during an event on SR 1 (Leo Road), 1 mile north of Tonkel Road in Fort Wayne. Members of the media were safely escorted to the work site, close to traffic, to experience a bridge deck cleaning project.

Also on hand for this event was Laurel Miller, the mother of 25-year-old Ryan Zimmerman, who was killed in a work zone accident in Decatur, Ind., on April 13, 2011. Laurel spoke briefly with the media about the need for drivers to be aware, pay attention and slow down in work zones.

“These workers are just doing their jobs and making a living like you,” she said. “SLOW DOWN. Your speeding maybe will get you to where you’re going one to two minutes earlier. Is that worth someone’s life? … These workers just want to get home to their families like everyone else.”

Laurel Miller and Dwayne Zimmerman, Ryan’s father, also spoke about Ryan just prior to the beginning of Work Zone Awareness Week. The video is available here: The media is encouraged to share this video with their viewers and online readers.
