[multiple] [s50] Gov. Pence Signs Becker’s Bill Giving First Responders More Tools to Help Treat Disaster Victims

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (April 17, 2013) — State Sen. Vaneta Becker’s (R-Evansville) legislation giving first responders more tools to help treat disaster victims was signed into law Monday, April 15, by Gov. Mike Pence.

Becker said House Bill 1111 enhances the authority and ability of first responders to practice tactical emergency medicine, which means care provided in the field instead of a hospital – usually in a crisis environment, like a natural disaster. Under current law, members of law enforcement and other organizations who are trained to practice emergency medicine are sometimes prohibited from treating disaster victims on site.

“Monday’s unconscionable violence in Boston only further proves the urgency in making sure our first responders have the legal authority and training to treat victims on the ground in situations when immediate medical care can mean the difference between life and death,” Becker said. “It’s a relief to see the quick passage of this vital legislation to support our first responders and help save lives.”

HB 1111 passed both the Senate and House of Representatives unanimously earlier this session. The new law takes effect immediately.
