Lanane: Let’s do what makes fiscal sense for all Hoosiers

Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS–Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) released the following statement concerning the state’s April revenue forecast presented before the State Budget Committee today.

“Today’s revenue forecast is encouraging, but it’s also a reminder that people expect lawmakers to focus on what’s in the long-term interest of all Hoosiers, and to be extremely cautious in protecting Indiana’s hard-earned fiscal integrity.

“We should remember that the average Hoosier earns $36,902 annually, a per capita income that ranked Indiana 40th nationwide in 2012. The state’s unemployment rate – up three straight months – remains stubbornly above 8 percent and folks are looking for real solutions.

“As to the governor’s proposed 10 percent income tax cut, the fact is it would generate about $10 a month in savings for Hoosier families with incomes in the middle 20 percent. That amount drops to less than $3 a month in the Senate-passed tax cut. Hoosiers know about $33 a year won’t put their neighbors back to work or repave crumbling roads.

“We can do better. We can send a clear message that improving the livelihoods of all Hoosiers is job one. There’s still an opportunity to direct more funding towards the rebuilding of local roads to create jobs today and lower the cost of doing business in Indiana. There’s still time to ensure Hoosier children have access to the best possible education and to train a highly-skilled workforce capable of attracting top-flight employers paying competitive wages.

“I’m hopeful my colleagues take a step back and look at what really matters to Hoosiers. We can do what’s prudent, and ensure our children inherit a Hoosier economy built on sensible, long-term investments. Let’s do what’s right for all Hoosiers.”
