Rep. Kirchhofer: Gov. Pence signs law to strengthen Indiana nursing schools

STATEHOUSE: Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer (R-Beech Grove) is pleased to see Governor Pence sign House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1518 into law today. HEA 1518 will permit the Indiana State Board of Nursing to use the impaired nursing account to hire an education compliance officer.

“Members of the Indiana State Board of Nursing had to use their own vacation days and personal time to evaluate and accredit different nursing schools all over Indiana,” said Rep. Kirchhofer. “HEA 1518 will allow these members to be compensated for their time and efforts in keeping our nursing programs as some of the best in the nation.”

Currently, the Indiana State Board of Education is responsible for accrediting nursing programs throughout the state. It takes two years in order to accredit a nursing program, forcing board members to use their own time in order to fulfill that duty. HEA 1518 will allow the Indiana State Board of Nursing to use a limit of 12.5 percent of the Impaired Nurses Account for two preceding years to hire an education compliance officer.  The education compliance officer will be in charge of carrying out the duties of the board.

Rep. Kirchhofer was an author of HEA 1518. Along with Rep. Kirchhofer, authors of the bill were Rep. Milo Smith (R-Columbus) and Rep. Greg Porter (D-Indianapolis). HEA 1518 was passed with vast bipartisan support through both the Indiana House and Senate.

“This legislation will allow the Board of Nursing to have the necessary resources in order to keep a high level of integrity for our Hoosier state,” said Rep. Kirchhofer. “It is vital that we continue to pass legislation that advances our state’s education and health programs, keeping Indiana a leading competitor in the nation.”
