[s17] Sen. Banks: House Approves Principal Grant Program

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 15, 2013)Public school principals would have more state support to strengthen their leadership skills under legislation authored by State Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City). Senate Bill 402 passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 90-2 and returns to the Senate for final legislative review.

SB 402 establishes the Principal Leadership Grant Program to fund leadership and managerial training for public school principals through the state’s higher education institutions. To receive a grant from the fund, principals must meet eligibility requirements and enroll in a program that meets standards determined by the Indiana Department of Education and State Board of Education.

“Many school principals want to improve their management skills, but it can be difficult due to the time and money involved,” Banks said. “Through this grant program, we’re helping make sure that our schools are led by administrators with the most up-to-date training on leadership skills. Principals will then take these skills back to their local schools, improving public education across Indiana.”

Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) is the bill’s sponsor.
