[DNR] Celebrate National Volunteer Week at state parks & reservoirs

From maintaining trails to entering computer data, Hoosiers to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 21-27, by helping Indiana’s State Parks & Reservoirs.

"Volunteering gives you a great sense of accomplishment,” said Jody Heaston, volunteer coordinator for the DNR Division of State Parks & Reservoirs. “You know you are helping manage and conserve our natural and cultural resources for future generations to enjoy.”

Heaston said she hopes many volunteers from National Volunteer Week will “catch the giving-back spirit” and continue to volunteer.

Information about volunteer opportunities at specific properties can be found by calling the office at those properties. Some examples:

—Assisting Turkey Run State Park, April 19 or 20, for Earth Day on the River, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. each day. Volunteers will run fun nature activity stations for families. For more information, call (765) 597-2654.

—Helping the Friends of Ouabache State Park group clean up the new Flatwoods Nature Preserve in the park on April 20. Meet at Trail’s End Shelter at 9 a.m. For more information, call (260) 824-0926.

—Serving in trail work days at Harmonie State Park, April 20 or 21, from 9 3 p.m. each day. Meet at the campground gatehouse. For more information, call (812) 682-4821.

—Helping with the 12th Annual Hardy Lake Sweep shoreline cleanup project on April 27 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers should register their teams by calling (812) 752-2269.

—Lending a hand at Tippecanoe River State Park on May 4 at 10 spruce up the nature center and surroundings. For more information, call (574) 946-3213.

—Picking up trash around Mississinewa Lake campground. For more information, call (765) 473-6528.
