[r68] Human trafficking law strengthens law enforcement capabilities
Start Date: 4/11/2013 All Day
End Date: 4/11/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – Governor Mike Pence recently signed Senate Bill 509 into law, a bill sponsored by State Representative Jud McMillin (R-Brookville). Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 509 will provide law enforcement officials a broader ability to investigate human trafficking cases of a child less than 18 years old.

“The FBI released information that from 2009 to 2012 pending human trafficking cases have increased substantially from 167 to 459 in the US,” said Rep. McMillin. “SEA 509 updates and strengthens Indiana’s current human trafficking guidelines which is a positive step in making our Hoosier communities safer.”

Currently, the law provides that an individual, who knowingly recruits, harbors or transports a child less than 16 years of age with the purpose of engaging the child in forced labor, prostitution, sexual conduct or involuntary servitude commits the promotion of human trafficking of a minor.
SEA 509 will update Indiana’s laws concerning the trafficking of minors to align with most other states and federal law. The legislation will increase the child’s age that authorities can investigate from below 16 years of age to 18.

“Human trafficking is the second largest criminal activity in the world, and for the safety of our children, it is important to provide Indiana’s law enforcement officials with each and every tool necessary to properly investigate and bring to justice those committing these horrible offenses,” said Rep. McMillin.
