Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — Senate Bill (SB) 433, sponsored by State Representative Dick Hamm (R-Richmond), passed the Indiana House on Wednesday with a unanimous vote.

SB 433 establishes a method for county executives to dispose of properties that did not sell at a tax sale to a person able to repair and maintain them.

“This bill establishes a procedure that would permit county governments to get rid of abandoned property and provides them a procedure to do so,” said Rep. Hamm “Once the properties are properly maintained, they can then be sold, rather than remain vacant.”

SB 433 also stipulates that a person with a substantial interest in the property must be given an opportunity to redeem the property prior to the transfer, protecting interested parties from government overreach.

“This legislation aids the county governments in attempting to restore neighborhoods with unsightly properties,” said Rep. Hamm. “It also benefits Hoosiers by making their communities more aesthetically pleasing to potential businesses, transplant families and tourists.”

SB 433 will now be sent back to the Senate for consent on the amendments.
