Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — Legislation co-sponsored by State Representative Denny Zent (R-Angola) was signed into law yesterday by Governor Pence. Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 115 requires state educational institutions that have at least 200 veteran students enrolled to establish a Combat to College program.

“As a veteran of both the Army and the Air Force, I remember very well how difficult it was to return to civilian life,” said Rep. Zent. “SEA 115 helps veterans return to civilian life and helps them obtain a higher education in order to pursue their respective careers.”

Current law does not require colleges to have a program in place to help veterans transition to college life. To remedy that situation, SEA 115 requires universities to provide veteran students with counseling, academic guidance, disability accommodations, job search programs and a centralized location for admissions, registration and financial administration services.

“As a society, we owe a tremendous amount to our veterans,” said Rep. Zent. “Helping our veterans transition from combat to college is the least we can do for a population who has sacrificed so much for our freedom.”

SEA 115 will go into effect on July 1, 2013.
