Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – Newburgh resident, Casey DePriest, came to the Statehouse today to advocate in favor of music therapy, and more specifically the licensing of music therapists. DePriest is the inspiration behind the legislative efforts of State Representative Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) to license music therapists.

“Casey is a true leader in our community,” said Rep. Crouch. “Her legislative advocacy in support of licensing music therapists is coming fruition.”

Rep. Crouch is supporting Senate Bill 273 which has been amended to require anyone who professes to be a certified music therapist must hold and maintain credentialing administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).  CBMT is the only organization that certifies music therapists to practice nationally.

Music therapy has recently entered the national spotlight because of the substantial role it played in the rehabilitation of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. The incorporation of music therapy in Giffords’ treatment played a major part in her regaining the ability to speak.

“Music therapy has the potential to change the lives of patients in need of those services,” said Rep. Crouch. “It is an important tool in one’s rehabilitation, but it should also be administered by a licensed professional therapist.”
