[r26] Rep. Truitt honors local medical company in House resolution
Start Date: 4/1/2013Start Time: 10:00 AM
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE - State Representative Randy Truitt (R-West Lafayette) co-authored a House resolution honoring the 50th anniversary of Cook Group Inc. and the many contributions made for the people of Indiana, the United States and the world by the Cook Group companies and their founding family.

“The Cook Group is an inspiration to our community,” said Rep. Truitt. “Thanks to the success of this company, many individuals are gainfully employed, and we continue to experience economic growth in our area. It was a real pleasure to honor the company today and their accomplishments in the medical industry and with their charitable work.”

Cook Incorporated was founded in 1963 by the late Bill Cook and his wife, Gayle. The company started in the couples’ spare bedroom in their apartment in Bloomington. Today, the company is the world’s largest family-owned medical device manufacturer. The company evolved from serving a single medical specialty and manufacturing a handful of products for United States sale into a global entity selling more than 16,000 different products in 135 countries.

It is the first American company to introduce United States physicians to the matched set of needle, wire guide, and catheter needed to perform the percutaneous vascular entry procedure known as the Seldinger technique. The nonsurgical technique created the medical science of interventional medicine, opening new possibilities for physicians to diagnose and treat patients in a minimally invasive manner.

“To start from such humble beginnings to now being one of the biggest medical device manufacturers in the world is truly a remarkable feat,” said Rep. Truitt. “Bill and Gayle Cook are Hoosier icons who have dedicated their lives to bettering their community and the lives of millions who use their medical devices today.”

The Cook Group has experienced continuous growth for 50 years in both revenue and employment, expanding from just two employees in 1963 to more than 11,000 worldwide.  They have two business units located in West Lafayette.
