[ISP] DNA Evidence Leads to Liberty Man's Arrest for 2008 Crime Spree

Entry Description

Liberty – A Liberty man was arrested yesterday for burglaries he committed in Union and Fayette Counties over four years ago by using DNA evidence collected at the crime scenes. Virgus Colt Browning III, age 22, of a rural address outside of Liberty, was arrested yesterday at his home for three counts of Class “C” Felony Burglary and one “D” Felony count of Theft.

The charges stem from multiple crime scenes on an August night in 2008. Trooper Eric Thumb was called to a garage burglary on Springersville Road in Union County. While at that scene he collected blood from a broken window believed to have been broken by the perpetrator. Thumb then took a stolen bike report from a house just a few doors down.

That bike was found in a ditch on Springersville Road into Fayette County, and blood was collected from it. A car was stolen at a home near where the bike was ditched and crashed further down the road. Thumb carefully took blood samples from blood found in the car. Just a little further down the road Thumb took a stolen report for a pickup truck.

That truck was found crashed later that evening in Fayette County. Blood was found in the truck and samples were again taken by Thumb. All the samples were then submitted to the Indiana State Police Lab. In January of this year, Thumb received a surprise call from the State Police Lab. They advised him they had a DNA match for his 2008 reports.

Further investigation and DNA testing showed that Virgus Colt Browning was a match for the perpetrator of the 2008 crime spree. Browning had been arrested on another charge last year and sentenced to the Indiana Department of Corrections for a short sentence. As an inmate at IDOC Browning’s DNA was taken to add to a data base kept on offenders. As a result of that sample the match was made.

This case is an example of thorough crime scene investigation by a trooper combining with technology to solve crimes. The Indiana State Police operates four forensic laboratories within the state that provide scientific analysis and preservation of evidence collected at crime scenes. For more information on the Indiana State Police Laboratory Division you can visit their web site at www.in.gov/isp/labs/

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
