[s7] Sen. Hershman: House Approves Bill to Combat Gang Activity in Schools

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 2, 2013) — State Sen. Brandt Hershman’s (R-Buck Creek) legislation to prevent school gang activity passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 95-0. Rep. Randy Truitt (R-West Lafayette) is the bill’s sponsor.

Senate Bill 352 expands the uses of the Indiana Safe Schools Fund to include educational outreach and school personnel training concerning the identification and prevention of criminal gang activity. The bill would also require school boards to put in place anti-gang policies and awareness programs using model materials developed by the Indiana Department of Education.

Hershman said the motivation for his bill came from discussions he’s had with Tippecanoe County officials — including Prosecutor Pat Harrington and Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-Gang Initiatives Director Kathryn Redd —  who both see a need  to combat gang activity in Indiana schools.

“Gang activity today doesn’t look the same as it did five or 10 years ago,” Hershman said. “The Internet and social media have accelerated the spread of gang activity to suburban and rural areas that, up until now, haven’t had to confront this problem. Because of this development, it’s critical that we keep our schools constantly up-to-date on shifting recruitment trends. I’m grateful for Rep. Truitt’s efforts in getting this bill passed, and I look forward to seeing it encourage further collaboration between our schools and communities.”

The legislation now returns to the Senate for final consideration.
