Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — The 2013 legislative session has concluded. State Representative Ed Clere (R-New Albany) is pleased to see the success of two of his top priority bills this session: House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1005 and HEA 1312.

HEA 1005 aims to reduce remedial needs of high school graduates. The need for remedial courses in post-secondary education is a burden of both time and money for college students. This legislation will help address those needs when the students are still in high school, so that when they enter post-secondary education, they are fully equipped to succeed.

“It is important that college-bound students demonstrate proficiency in core subjects,” said Rep. Clere. “Without that proficiency, they will waste a great deal of time and money remediating at the college level. A strong educational foundation at the high school level will help students succeed in college and in life.”

HEA 1312 changes the College Work Study Program into the Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program. The new EARN Indiana Program is a year-round program that gives low-income students the chance to have a learning work experience while still in school.

“This law allows students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, which is what employers are looking for,” said Rep. Clere. “Instead of just a paycheck for part-time work, EARN is a way for students to acquire experience that will help them get a job in their chosen field.”
