Rep. Lutz: Legislation passed this session helps Hoosiers

STATEHOUSE— The 2013 legislative session has come to a finish. Rep. Jack Lutz (R-Anderson) is pleased to see two of his top priority bills become law this session: Senate Enroll Act (SEA) 319 and House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1002.

“One of our top priorities this session was to provide greater opportunities for Hoosiers to acquire high-quality jobs,” said Rep. Lutz. “We accomplished exactly that in HEA 1002 by creating a council to improve and craft better training programs and opportunities Hoosiers to build a prosperous future.”

HEA 1002 creates the Indiana Career Council to coordinate the participants in the state’s educational, job skills and career training systems to address the “skills gap.” The Indiana Career Council will work to improve coordination, communication and vision for Indiana’s workforce training and career preparation systems, the ICC is a panel that will bring the principal stakeholders in the state’s workforce development efforts to a single table to create a stronger plan to move Indiana forward.

SB 319 addresses the assessment of farmland for property tax purposes.  The Department of Local Government Finance had produced a list of changes last year that equals an immediate 20 percent increase in property taxes on farmland.  Taxes on farmland the last few years have increased dramatically as the newly enacted controls have held other classes of property static or reduced.  By fast tracking the bill, local assessors can implement the new statute before spring documents are mailed out to property owners.

“It was vital that we pass legislation this session that supported Indiana’s agriculture community,” said rep. Lutz.  “We were able to reduce the financial pressure farmers have been facing due to an increased tax burden, helping farmers to continue Indiana’s position as one of the nation’s great agricultural states,” said Rep. Lutz.
