AUDIO RELEASE: Breaux, Taylor react to passage of partisan power-grab
Start Date: 4/26/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM

Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS – On Friday, a controversial measure eliminating elected officials and shifting budgeting power to the executive branch of Marion County government passed the Senate on a nearly party-line vote. Assistant Democratic Leader Jean D. Breaux (D-Indianapolis) and Senator Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) released the following statements expressing their disappointment with the final passage of Senate Bill 621.

Senator Breaux:

“Senate Bill 621, a bill that I have opposed since the very beginning of session, has run its course. It’s passed out of the House, it’s passed out of the Senate and is on its way to the governor’s office. This bill seeks to control the city of Indianapolis in a way that is unfair and undemocratic. It’s a bill that – although it has worked its way through the system – I will continue to fight.

“There were three reasons I opposed the bill. Number one is that it forces the legislative process, instead of allowing city leaders to lead. Secondly, the bill runs contrary to what most of the members of this body on the Republican side believe; that there should be some local control and there should be no interference by the state into local control. This bill very much does that.

“And lastly, I think it sends the message that if you don’t like the way the political winds are blowing in this state, you just go to the legislature and ask them to change it artificially. I think that’s very disappointing.”

Senator Taylor:

“What happened today with the passage of 621 was a huge leap. It’s a leap into a form of government that was created by this body, that took the people and took them out of the equation.

“We always had a policy here that the people have the power. They have the votes, they determine whether or not we have an elected government and who those elected officials are. This body and the party that wants power has come here and unleashed their power.

“As a Marion County voter and a tax payer, I’m sick to my stomach. It is a move backwards. It’s something that I never felt like this body would ever do. Even up until today I thought this was a joke, and I can’t believe that we did this.”
