[OCRA] Young Entrepreneurs Expo

Entry Description

Indianapolis – The Young Entrepreneurs Expo was held today at the University of Indianapolis. It met its goal of introducing 15 ideas from young entrepreneurs to communities who are willing to help them with their new businesses.

Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellsperamnn spoke at the event and has been the driving force behind the Young Entrepreneurs Program (YEP). Lt. Governor Ellspermann also authored the legislation to create YEP during her time as a state representative.

“The Young Entrepreneur Program, unique to Indiana, creates a linkage between our graduating entrepreneurship majors and minors in our universities with communities interested in helping them launch their businesses,” said Lt. Governor Ellspermann. “YEP helps us retain our best and brightest young adults in Indiana while growing the next generation of successful businesses for our Hoosier economy.”
The Expo is the culmination of a year long process where young entrepreneurs throughout the state submitted business ideas to the Indiana Small Business Development Center (ISBDC). ISBDC shared the ideas with local communities, who then gathered to bid on the businesses they would like to locate in their towns.

In exchange for the entrepreneur agreeing to locate in a community for at least three years, the local town, county, or city agrees to support the launch effort through reduced/free rent, grants, loans, or utility support.

Communities will have approximately two weeks to consider which business(es) they wish to pursue and to develop an incentives package. The young entrepreneurs will then review their offers before deciding which community to locate their new venture. Their decisions will be announced this summer.
