Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (April 25, 2013) — The Senate on Wednesday approved a resolution sponsored by State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) urging the federal government to repeal a new excise tax on the sale of medical devices in the United States. The tax is a provision of the Affordable Care Act.

The medical device industry is a strong economic driver in Indiana, contributing $44 billion to the state’s economy and employing 26,000 Hoosiers. Leising said that the tax would adversely affect residents of her district.

“Hill-Rom, which is headquartered in Batesville, is a worldwide leading manufacturer of hospital beds and other medical devices,” Leising said. “They are a $1.63 billion industry, and I am concerned of what the economic impact could be locally if the tax is not repealed.”

Leising also noted that under the new tax, Indiana’s medical device industry is projected to pay a minimum of $77 million in taxes this year.
