Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 24, 2013) — State Sen. Rodric Bray’s (R-Martinsville) legislation to improve court procedures protecting at-risk youth received final legislative approval today and now heads to the governor’s desk for consideration.

Bray said Senate Bill 202 provides extra protection to children involved in court cases regarding child custody, guardianship, paternity or visitation issues. The bill requires a party in such a case to inform the court if any adult or child involved in the case has been the subject of a Department of Child Services investigation.

“The primary goal of custody and visitation cases must always be to uphold the best interest and protection of the child,” Bray said. “This legislation will ensure courts have the information to meet that goal. No child should end up in a dangerous environment because a court made the decision without knowing all the facts.”
