[s42] Senate Approves Resolution to Study Volunteer Fire Department Issues

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (April 22, 2013) — The Senate approved on Monday a resolution authored by State Sens. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) and Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne) urging the creation of an interim study committee on the topic of volunteer fire departments in Indiana.

Senate Resolution 70 calls for further examination of a portion of a law approved last year, House Enrolled Act 1005, which is intended to reduce conflicts of interest in local government. Leising authored the resolution to study whether there is a conflict of interest for a volunteer firefighter to also serve as an elected official, as well as how many volunteers will be forced to leave elected office or firefighting because of the law.

“I opposed that legislation last year because I believe these volunteers provide a great service to rural communities across Indiana,” Leising said. “By forcing our public servants to choose one position over the other, we could lose some great leaders across the state. We need to study this issue in order to ensure we do what’s best for these volunteers and the people they serve.”

Wyss, chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs, offered an amendment to the resolution during the committee’s hearing to also study how volunteer fire departments are funded and trained.

“Currently, we have more than 800 volunteer fire departments serving the people of Indiana,” Wyss said. “Through this study committee, we’ll be able to find ways to better utilize these volunteers’ skills and ensure they’re receiving the proper support for their lifesaving work.”
