Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 16, 2013) — State Sen. John Waterman’s (R-Shelburn) bill to tighten Indiana’s human trafficking statute received support from Gov. Mike Pence Friday, April 12, and is set to take effect this July.

Waterman said Senate Bill 509 makes it illegal to knowingly or intentionally recruit, harbor or transport a child less than 18 years of age with the intent of engaging the child in forced labor or any sexual act. Current law applies only to a child less than 16 years of age.

“Human trafficking is a global crime that can happen right here in our home communities,” Waterman said. “Indiana must take a hard line against criminals who prey on children and commit these atrocious crimes. I’m grateful the General Assembly and our governor supported this initiative to improve and strengthen our state’s laws against human trafficking.”

SB 509 passed both the Senate and House of Representatives unanimously earlier this session.
