[R31] New law provides additional funds for police training and equipment

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Kevin Mahan (R-Hartford City) sponsored legislation regarding the County Extradition and Sheriff's Assistance Fund which was signed by Gov. Mike Pence on Friday.

Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 24 replaces the County Extradition Fund (CEF) with the County Extradition and Sheriff's Assistance Fund (CEASAF). This new law expands the uses of this fund allowing it to be used to pay for police training and equipment. It will also fund other costs incurred by the county sheriff's department in providing law enforcement services.

“This law will allow for greater flexibility in the use of local dollars,” said Rep. Mahan. “By using funds not previously available, it will help offset the high cost of training new law enforcement officers. This will allow for more training for sheriff’s offices, or free up funds to be used elsewhere in the county.”

Under current law, counties have a CEF to cover the costs of extraditing criminals to locations outside the county. The money in the CEF comes from forfeited bails bonds, and can also be appropriated by the county council if the returned bonds do not raise enough money to cover the cost of extraditing prisoners.

This law will go into effect on July 1, 2013.
