Local students receive prestigious award at the Statehouse

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Tim Brown (R-Crawfordsville) congratulates Brian M. Thompson from Crawfordsville and Kaitlin E. Emmert from Jamestown for receiving the 2013 Comcast Leaders & Achievers Scholarship today. The award recognizes high school seniors for their outstanding leadership skills, high academic performance and participation in community service projects.

“I applaud Brian and Kaitlin for receiving this prestigious award, recognizing their academic and philanthropic accomplishments,” said Rep. Brown. “This scholarship is a great way to reward students for being active in their communities and excelling in their studies.”

Beginning annually in 2000, Comcast reaches out to high school guidance counselors and principals to recognize the brightest seniors as the nation’s “leaders and achievers.” The award recipients were nominated for their extensive involvement in their schools and participation in various service projects that positively impact their communities.

Since 2001, Comcast has awarded approximately $19 million in scholarship funds to more than 19,000 students across the nation. Thompson, who attends Crawfordsville High School, and Emmert, who attends Western Boon Jr.-Sr. High School, were two of 49 Hoosier students to receive the $1,000 award.

“Students today balance multiple demands on a daily basis – get good grades, be active in school functions and volunteer in the community,” said Rep. Brown. “All of these things help students differentiate themselves as they work to prepare for life after high school. I am confident that Brian and Kaitlin will continue to make a difference in their future endeavors.”

The award was presented by First Lady Karen Pence at the Indiana Statehouse.
