Entry Description

Jackson County: This morning the actions of three Indiana State Troopers saved the life of a 51 year old Charlestown, IN woman. Just after 8:00 this morning Senior Trooper Stephen Wheeles responded to a report of a crash involving an overturned vehicle on I-65 southbound at the 56.5 mile marker just south of the Jackson/Bartholomew County line. Upon arrival, S/Tpr. Wheeles observed 15 year old Nathaniel Bell had been ejected from the vehicle and lying nearby. The driver of the vehicle, Malinda Miller-Bell, was partially ejected with her head being pinned under the vehicle. S/Tpr. Wheeles began breaking out the front windshield of the vehicle to gain access to Miller-Bell. Troopers Brent Lykins and Korry Clark soon arrived on scene. Acting upon S/Tpr. Wheeles’ request, Lykins and Clark retrieved car jacks and positioned them under the vehicle. The troopers were able to lift the vehicle enough with the jacks to keep the vehicle from further crushing the victim’s head. S/Tpr. Wheeles and Tpr. Lykins continued breaking out the front windshield until access was gained to the interior of the vehicle. Fire department and ambulance personnel arrived on scene and used airbags to further remove Miller-Bell from under the vehicle.

According to S/Tpr. Wheeles, who led the crash investigation, 51 year old Malinda Miller-Bell was traveling northbound on I-65 near the 56.5 mile marker in a 2005 Ford Free Star van when for unknown reasons she lost control of the van and traveled through the median into the southbound lanes of I-65. When the van entered the southbound lanes it was struck head on by a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by 89 year old Vernon Thacker of New Palestine, IN. After impact the Avalanche ran off the west side of the interstate where it rolled over one time coming to rest on its wheels. The van also ran off the west side of the interstate where it rolled an undetermined number of times ejecting the 15 year old passenger (Nathaniel Bell, son of Malinda Miller-Bell) and partially ejecting Miller-Bell coming to rest on the passenger side pinning Miller-Bell. It is believed neither occupant of the van was wearing their seat belts while Thacker was restrained.

Miller-Bell was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville where she is expected to survive her injuries. Nathaniel Bell and Thacker were both transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour with non life-threatening injuries.

S/Tpr. Wheeles was assisted by Troopers Brent Lykens and Korry Clark. Also assisting at the scene was Seymour Fire Department, Jonesville Fire Department, Jackson County Ambulance, PHI Air Ambulance, and 31 Wrecker Service.
