Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Senate recently approved a bill authored by State Senator Earline Rogers (D-Gary) to encourage family involvement with students in public schools

“More and more studies have shown that children perform better academically if parents or families are involved in their education,” Sen. Rogers said. “The passage of this bill would help to further increase student performance and offer families another variable in considering which schools to send their children.”

Senate Bill (SB) 422 would establish the Family Friendly School Designation program to help schools develop family engagement and student involvement opportunities. The program is voluntary and may be awarded to schools based on pre-established practices that encourage parent involvement in school activities and student achievement.

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) would develop the program in partnership with statewide organizations that link family involvement with student success. The IDOE would be tasked with developing rubrics for evaluating parent involvement, including surveys of teachers, students and other parents. The results of the evaluations will also be available to the public.

SB 422 was again approved by the full Senate, 45-4, and will now move to the governor for his approval.

Sen. Rogers represents Indiana Senate District 3 which encompasses portions of Lake County. District 3 communities include Gary, Lake Station, New Chicago, Hobart, Ainsworth, Merrillville and Crown Point.
