[r82] “Land surveyor” name-change legislation signed into law
Start Date: 4/10/2013 All Day
End Date: 4/10/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – Legislation updating the official title of land surveyors, to better describe their present responsibilities, was signed into law by Governor Mike Pence today. Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 558, Sponsored by State Representative David Ober (R-Albion), will go into effect July 1, 2013.

This law changes the official title of registered “land surveyors” to “professional surveyors.” The change more accurately reflects the wide-range of duties fulfilled by the surveyors which include measuring the distance between dams, roads, pipelines, bridges or residential areas.

“Certified land surveyors are responsible for performing a broad-range of tasks, far beyond what their title reflects, and they deserve a designation that encompasses all of the duties they perform,” said Rep. Ober. “This legislation will not expand the scope of what a land surveyor’s job encompasses; it only changes the name and updates outdated code.”

This legislation is estimated to affect 906 land surveyors and 427 land surveyors in training with an active certification. To become certified as a land surveyor, an individual must complete four years of schooling and all state registration requirements.
