[multiple] [s50] Gov. Pence Signs Sen. Becker’s Bill Giving Youth Sports Referees More Job Opportunities

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 9, 2013) — State Sen. Vaneta Becker’s (R-Evansville) legislation altering Indiana's labor laws to give young Hoosiers more work opportunities in youth sports was signed into law today by Gov. Mike Pence.
Senate Bill 153 creates an exemption in state law to allow Hoosiers 12 years of age and older to work as youth athletic program referees, umpires or officials. Currently, a child must be at least 14 years old.

Becker said Newburgh-resident Matthew Burkart, a 13-year-old Evansville Holy Rosary Catholic School student, brought this issue to her attention after he was turned down for a referee job at a local soccer club because he was too young by state law.

“Matthew has been closely involved in the legislative process to turn his proposal into reality,” Becker said.  “It’s been a pleasure to work with him, and I hope to see many young Hoosiers take advantage of these new opportunities to get age-appropriate work experience and pursue their passions.”
SB 153 takes effect immediately.
