Representative Turner honored at the 9th Annual Kennedy-King Commemoration

STATEHOUSE – State Representative P. Eric Turner (R-Cicero) was honored with the Trailblazer Award at the 9th Annual Kennedy-King Commemoration. The award was given to Rep. Turner to recognize his long-term service as an Indiana state representative and for his efforts toward the initial passage of Indiana’s Second Chance Act for ex-offenders.

“I am honored to receive this award as I continue to work for Hoosiers in a manner that best represents our community and the needs of our state,” said. Rep. Turner. “Martin Luther King, Jr. was an extraordinary man who was able to accomplish great things. In the movement towards equality, he was more than a leader; he was an inspiration.”

The event took place on April 4 at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Indianapolis to commemorate U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy’s speech on the night of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s tragic death. This year’s theme was Making the Dream a Reality: What Does it Mean to be a Dream Keeper? Peace, Community Service and Redemption.

In addition to Rep. Turner, those who received the Trailblazer Award included:
  • Mary Beth Bonaventura – former Lake County Judge and current head of Indiana’s Department of Child Services.
  • Mae Dickinson – served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1993 to 2007, former member of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus and long-time advocate for children’s issues and victims of domestic violence.
  • Richard Hatcher – former Mayor of Gary, Ind., first African-American to be elected mayor of a major American city.
  • Richard Lugar – served on the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners from 1964 to 1967, former Mayor of Indianapolis from 1968 to 1976 and former U.S. Senator from 1977 to 2012.
  • Clara Anderson – former head of the Indianapolis Children’s Bureau and has been very involved in state legislation that affects children.
  • Lorenzo Arredondo – first Latino judge in Indiana (Lake Co.) and the longest serving Latino elected state trial court judge in American history.  He retired in 2011.
  • Charles Redd – former city-councilor in Fort Wayne, Ind.  He passed away in February, 2013
“To be recognized alongside such distinguished Hoosiers is truly humbling. These individuals have dedicated their lives to the greater good in an effort to make a difference for the betterment of those around them,” said Rep. Turner.

Rep. Turner’s legislative work has spanned nearly three decades with the ceremony recognizing his work on Indiana’s Second Chance Act for ex-offenders. The Second Chance Act for ex-offenders allows records to be sealed as long as the person is not convicted as a sex offender or violent offender; is not convicted of a misdemeanor or a Class D felony that did not result in injury to a person; or eight years have passed since the person completed their sentence and have satisfied any other obligation imposed on the person as part of the sentence.

Governor Mike Pence and U.S. Rep. John Lewis served as co-keynote speakers for the event.
