Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (April 4, 2013) — State Sen. John Waterman (R-Shelburn) recently earned high praise from two state-wide organizations for advancing legislation in support of limited government and states’ rights.

The Indiana Chapter of Americans for Prosperity – a national organization that works to protect free markets and limited government – gave Waterman a perfect score in its 2013 Indiana Legislative Session Halftime Scorecard. He was among only four state senators to receive a 100-percent rating.

In addition, Waterman was the only Indiana state senator to receive a 100-percent rating on IN Liberty’s 2013 Limited Government Score Card.

“During my years serving in the General Assembly, I’ve been committed to supporting policies that defend states’ rights – especially as Washington overreaches and tries to force its one-size-fits-all policies on Americans,” Waterman said. “It is an honor to be recognized for that commitment, and I’m grateful to the grassroots organizations that work locally to uphold the limited government envisioned by our Founding Fathers.”

The following are some of the key bills from the 2013 legislative session that the two organizations considered when determining ratings:

• Senate Bill 193 to promote local control in Hoosier classrooms by allowing Indiana to opt out of the national Common Core education standards.
• Senate Bill 400 to prevent state officials from helping with the implementation of federal laws that do not protect citizens’ due process rights, such as the indefinite detention of Americans.
